As most of you know, May is the month of Mary. During the month of Mary the 5/6 grade class does
the Rosary daily. We divide the Rosary up from the beginning and the end. Like 5 first half and 6 end half.

May 13
This month has been such an inspiration and joy. We have been very busy with a variety of things! One new tradition we have begun this May is praying one decade of the Rosary every day at 10:10. It is such a peaceful mid-morning break for us all! Thank you to our Neon Neighbors who have settled nicely into the habit of this morning prayer. Next year we may consider doing this in both October and May.

One book, one school .
We are reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane as an entire school. Each day we have a trivia question and we often talk about the story including the rich vocabulary used by the author. What a great way to share!
The 5th and 6th graders are also following the Iditarod Race this year. We watched a bit of the start on class this afternoon.

The 5th and 6th grade science classes are both studying space and astronomy in some way. For this reason, we are doing a constellation project together. Students are to research a constellation and a myth about it. They are drawing the constellation on a 12 X 18 piece of black construction paper. They also need to read a myth and write a summary of the myth of their constellation. Finally each student will make a "fact sheet" for their project. These projects are due on Tuesday, January 13th.
We are excited to get the Chromebook into the class. We hope to have them in the hands of the students by next week! Thanks to the Home and School and also to Mr. Schanen for getting them and setting them up for us.

We returned back to school from Christmas vacation with a super cold day including indoor recess. When we shared the "highlights" from our break, I was impressed that most were about seeing cousins or grandparents rather than the gifts received. It is nice to see that the time shared with those we love is greatest gift of all!
We hope for warmer weather so that we can get out to play in the snow.

Today we celebrated the Immaculate Conception of Mary in school mass, and we rehearsed for the Christmas concert that's tomorrow. Everyone has new vocabulary words for our test on Friday. We end our economics unit with a test tomorrow. We were learning in economics about how to save, spend, plan, and how to use money.
We have three books going on in our book club. "The House of Dies Drear" book is getting very spooky and interesting. "Homer P. Figg" is getting interesting as Homer looks more for his brother. "The Kid in the Red Jacket" is also a great book.

Today was Tacky Tuesday! Everyone wore crazy clothes. Remember that tomorrow is neon tops, Thursday is decade day with grade 5 dressing like the 1960's; grade 6 is dressing up like the 1980's, and Friday is uniform morning or $ dress up for the Angel Fund. We will have our Halloween party at 1:00-2:15. Small treats are okay! We will have some Halloween activities to play and a parade at 1:55.
The Character Team would like to begin a school newspaper. They are meeting tomorrow after school to get started.
We had faith-a-thon practice today and played one of the games we will play in the competition. We had an English test today.

In Science 6 we are studying biomes. We are working on creating a poster on a biome such as freshwater, savannas, grasslands, tundras, marine, rainforests, and others. The fifth grade science class is finishing up our study on the human body with a test on the Circulatory and Excretory systems tomorrow.

Science 6- World in a Jar Ecosystem
The girls have three fish and two snails. Queenie is the white fish, Watermelon is a smaller fish with a bright pink color, and Annabeth has a long orange and black tail. When we put them in the far for the first time, we thought that we might have baby guppies because Queenie had a large stomach. We now have six baby guppies! (written by Gr. 6 girls)
This week was our first full week of school. We finally had our first Monday. We got some guppies and snails in science and put them in a far. We also put plants in the jar. They have been living in the far in our classroom for three days. Each day we have to journal about our ecosystem and how the organisms are doing. We thought one of our snails died, but we finally saw him move today.
Friday, September 12, was Grandparents' Day. We had fun playing Yahtzee and Uno with our grandparents. We loved it! (Written by Gr. 6 boys)

First Week of School
August 28, 2014
These first two days of school have been incredibly busy and exciting. It all started with the Red Carpet Welcome of our students yesterday. The 5th and 6th graders are practicing science skills in science class. Each class did a mini lab on the first day of school to demonstrate the skills of observation, estimating, predicting, recording/organizing data, and more.
The 5th graders are learning about the story of Creation. Ask them about what book of the Bible the story come from. Also see if they remember who wrote that book of the Bible.
The students have settled into a routine, and I am anticipating great things from them this year.
